Jumbo Natural Loofah (Dried Sponge Gourd)
Item description
Most people don’t know that the original loofah isn’t plastic at all. It’s a vegetable. It’s a ridge gourd (peerkangai in Tamil) left on the vine until it dries completely. Then the skin and seeds are removed, and what’s left is a light, natural sponge made of fibres.
This is the jumbo size, so it lasts longer than the small pieces sold in shops. When it’s dry, it feels hard and scratchy. Dip it in water for a minute and it turns soft and bouncy, just right for a daily bath. It gently removes dead skin from your arms, legs and back and leaves your skin feeling smooth and clean.
You can use it whole or cut it into smaller pieces with a knife or scissors. Many people keep one piece for the bath and use another to wash vessels. It also works well for cleaning the sink and tiles.
When it gets old, put it in your compost pit or garden soil. It’s just a plant, so it breaks down completely.
